What is Red Dirt Music you ask?

In Texas, Oklahoma and up through the Midwest there is an Outlaw attitude in the music industry that is on the verge of exploding. This industry, called Red Dirt Music has been smoldering for several years. The industry has started to take notice in recent years with artists like Texas born Pat Green, whom was one of the first artists to break through and get national recognition among listeners that had never heard Texas Country or Red Dirt Music. Great music by talented musicians like Kevin Fowler, Jack Ingram, Stoney Larue, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Randy Rogers, Eli Young Band, No Justice, Bleu Edmondson, Jonathan Tyler and the Northern Lights, Whiskey Myers, Zac Brown, Wade Bowen, Bo Cox, Rodney Hayden, Robert Earl Keen, Band of Heathens, Reckless Kelly, Charlie Robison, Kevin Welch, Jamie Wilson, Todd Snider, Jason Eady and The Wayward Apostles, Billy Joe Shaver, Matt Skinner, Dean Dillion, Bonnie Bishop, Chris Knight, Walt Wilkins, Midnight River Choir, Modern Day Drifters, Hayes Carll, Ben Smith, Jason Boland and The Stragglers, Josh Abbott, Cory Morrow, Ray Wylie Hubbard, The Trishas, Wade Bowen, The Doug Moreland Show, Tina Wilkins, Roger Creager, Lucas Hubbard and Chad Hammock Band just to name a few. You just can't get this kind of music in major markets that radio owners/producers are determined not to play or only for a couple of hours once a week. We salute those radio stations like 105.3 FM Texas Mix out of Brenham that don't march to the Nashville beat and are dedicated to give us our Red Dirt. Red Dirt Music gets its name from the color of soil found in Oklahoma. Although Stillwater, Oklahoma is considered to be the epicenter of Red Dirt music, some say there's a Texas Red Dirt sound as well. Old school Texans and Okies alike will swear that the two were distinctly different. Outlaws, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson are associated with that distinctive Texas sound while Bob Childers defines Oklahoma Red Dirt music. Childers, known as the "Dylan of the dust" jammed to a slightly different country chord — Red Dirt style. These days, the gap separating the two genres has thinned.

Some define Red Dirt music as "country music with an attitude". Others say it's a state of mind as much as it is a sound - a sound that successfully closes the gap between rock and country. Although many bands got their start in Stillwater, each band has a distinctive sound said Brandon Jackson, guitar for the band No Justice. "The sound is different from each band to band to band. Some guys are more rock, some guys are more country, and there's everything in between," Jackson said.

Cody Canada, front-man for the band Cross Canadian Ragweed said, "Its country, folksy, bluesy and rock. When you get down to it, it's just blue collar music. It's a lot about the lyrics. It's a lot about the feeling of it. It doesn't have a label, I guess. It's everything from Merle Haggard influence to full blown Rolling Stones."

"Snorty is an adjective for ill-tempered or annoyed"

This is Snorty Horse pride and means there is more in the world than just what you hear on corporate country radio stations.  The rise of red dirt music shows that great music can originate in places other than Nashville.
